Kristof wonders whether Putin sought to influence the American elections to elect ‘Russia’s poodle,’ a president who would follow Putin’s lead and aligns himself with Russian interests. The intelligence community has already agreed that the Russian interference in American elections was meant to elect Donald Trump, and undermine public confidence in American electoral process. It is becoming clear that the Russians are reaping great rewards for their attack on American democracy. This attack on America should not be rewarded, writes Kristof. This is an unprecedented political development in American history. A foreign power hostile to America has succeeded in installing its preferred, inexperienced candidate to govern the US.
