Large Crowds Pay Last Respect to Fidel Castro

fidelcastro1978Large crowds paid their last respect to former Cuban President Fidel Castro, as the urn carrying his ashes passed by in Santiago, the birthplace of the Cuban Revolution, where he will be laid to rest. Fidel was one of the small group of revolutionaries who stormed the Moncada prison on 26 July 1956, trying to free their fellow revolutionaries and topple the US-backed government of Fulgencio Batista. That effort failed miserably, as most revolutioneries were killed and others, like Fidel, were arrested, tried, convicted, and sentenced to prison. Fidel and others were later released in an amnesty, and he moved to Mexico where he regrouped and reorganized as an effective militant revolutionary organization, which later succeeded in toppling the government and taking over power.
