Trump chooses retired Gen. James Mattis as defense secretary

general_matthisRetired Marine Gen. James N. Mattis has been selected by President-elect Donald Trump to be his defense secretary, according to a report in the Washington Post published on Thursday. Trump will likely announce this decision next week. Federal law states that defense secretaries must not have been on active duty in the previous seven years. Therefore, Matthis would need congress to pass a law which would exempt him from this statute. The last to have such an exemption was General George C. Marshall 65 years ago. Read more…
