Trump Picks Retired Gen. Kelly for Homeland Security

President-elect Donald J. Trump picked retired Marine General John Kelly to be the Secretary of Homeland Security. Gen. Kelly disagreed with President Obama regarding women in combat and Obama’s need to close the Guantanamo Bay prison.

Gen. Kelly retired in February 2016 as the head of US Southern Command. If confirmed, he will head the 240,000 employees Homeland Security department. Kelly’s views aligns with those of Trump, especially with regards to his known concerns about drugs, terrorism and other threads from across the border with Mexico. Gen. Kelly would be the third general nominated into the Trump cabinet, raising eyebrows about the militarization of the U.S. government, as Trump surrounds himself with these military generals.
