Trump Picks Rick Perry for Energy

In the 2011 Republican primaries, Rick Perry committed a memorable gaffe by forgetting the name of one of the federal agencies he wanted to abolish. He named Commerce and Education departments, then froze like a deer in the headlights, “The third one, I can’t. Sorry. Oops.” The third federal agency he wanted to abolish was the Energy Department. This is the same agency president-elect Donald J. Trump is appointing Perry to lead. Understandably, environmental advocates are seriously concerned by this pick. After all, Perry is a big advocate of fossil fuels, which he championed as governor of Texas for 14 years. He also questions the validity of scientific findings about climate change.
