Shameless House Republicans Gut Independent Ethics Office

On the eve of an historical power shift in Washington, DC, the House Republican conference voted, without advanced notice, to gut the independent Office of Congressional Ethics. This is the investigative office created in 2008 in response to reported misconduct by members of congress. Three members of congress are serving jail time because of the investigative work of this office.

Representative Robert W. Goodlatte, Republican of Virginia and chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, announced the changes which have been approved. The new changes gives power back to the anemic Congressional House Ethics Committee, by creating a new Office of Congressional Complaint Review that would report to the House Ethics Committee. Essntially, the new entity would report back to the people targeted by complaints to get authorization whether or not to proceed with the investigation. The foxes in the henhouse want the hens to report to the foxes whether or not to proceed with investigating the foxes for malfeasance.
